ECDL speed increase

I was just wondering is it worth turning the non-MMX functions into assembler.
I remember when distributed.net made assembler RC5 cores it was a massive increase in speed.
It may also be worth it if they could be reused for the next challenge which is a lot harder.
The only problem is they are not as portable so will require more work.
any assembler gurus out there?
